Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church and Smoke Signals are partnering to provide a free monthly community meal for all area residents, especially those experiencing food insecurity. The meal will be served the last Thursday of each month from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. beginning Jan. 30 at Shepherd of the Lake, 3611 N. Berens Road in Prior Lake.
Both organizations hope to raise awareness regarding food insecurity in the area by offering the meal in a safe, welcoming environment. All residents are invited to attend.
“When the co-founder of Smoke Signals, Rosemary Frank, approached us and asked if Shepherd of the Lake wanted to partner with them, it was a no brainer. Providing a free monthly community meal is at the core of our mission and values. We believe in an open table that gathers all people together and offers support for those in need,” according to John Holt, Director of Outreach and Mental Health at the church.
Funds are currently being raised to cover meal expenses. Volunteers are also being recruited to cook and serve the meals, along with setting up and cleaning up the dining space. Those looking to help with the initiative can email Frank at: sendingasmokesignal@gmail.com. According to Feed America, more than 9,000 people in Scott County are currently experiencing food insecurity.
