Before the spring sports calendar is in full swing, the News Compass is checking in with the coaches of Prior Lake varsity sports to get a preview of the competition ahead. Coach responses are lightly edited for clarity. Below is a look at the boys volleyball team, a group looking to challenge the best in the sport’s second year as a sanctioned sport by the high school league.
Coaches: Head coach Mark Nelson (eighth year with program), assistant coach Maggie D’Silva (seven years), junior varsity coach Ryan Fuller (five years), b-squad coach Ray Coffeilt (first year).
Team leadership: Team captains seniors Max Lonergan and Brad Stout, junior Enzo Lamogno, sophomore Dylan Chapman.
Top returning contributors: Most of last season’s team is returning, with Chapman, Lonergan and Stout leading the way.
What are your expectations for the team’s performance this season?
Head coach Mark Nelson: “We have high expectations this year. We have a very athletic team and we are hoping to be able to be competitive with anyone.”
What will be your team’s biggest challenge this season?
Nelson: “Although we are big and athletic, we need some work on core skills. If we can control the ball on our side — especially in serving and serve receive — then we will have a good chance of winning.”
Are there any big competitions on the calendar your team is looking forward to?
Nelson: “We look forward to playing some of the more formidable opponents in the state.”
Nelson specifically highlighted three road matchups, April 8 at Bloomington Jefferson, May 8 at Eastview and May 12 at Eden Prairie, along with a home contest, April 29 vs. Shakopee.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your team?
Nelson: “We have a very tall and dynamic team. I feel athletically we match up well with anyone. We are working hard on our skill progressions. If we can control the ball, we should be tough to beat.”
