The Prior Lake spring varsity sports and extracurriculars season is in full swing. Below is an update on how some of the Lakers teams have performed recently.
Speech
Two members of the speech team will be advancing to the national tournament after qualifying last weekend.
Leo Choi took sixth place in dramatic interpretation and Makenzie Bounds finished eighth in program oral interpretation at the NDSA Last-Chance Qualifier, earning the right to compete at nationals.
The Lakers also were at the state competition over the weekend, with Bounds pulling double-duty en route to becoming one of four Prior Lake finalists.
Bounds took sixth in poetry, joining fellow finalists Talia Bushman (second place, discussion), Katie Weaver (second, prose), and Chloe Erickson and Jayden Nelson (third, duo).
Boys tennis
A tough stretch in the schedule for Prior Lake boys tennis has given the team a chance to show its perseverance.
This much was evident in the team’s matchup with Southwest Christian last Friday. The Lakers fell 4-3 to the Stars, but each match was tightly contested.
In doubles play, PL’s August Adams and Andy Klema pushed past London Johnson and Wade Ganske 7-5, 6-2, while Lucas Aidas and Adam Greengrass came up victorious in a marathon of a deciding set, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Jack Williams outlasted a push by Southwest Christian’s Brock Walmer at No. 2 singles to tally Prior Lake’s other win in the contest, 6-0, 7-6.
The Lakers also showed fight in a 6-1 loss to No. 10-ranked Eastview and gutsy 4-3 conference win over Rosemount.
Prior Lake (4-2, 4-1 South Suburban Conference) will host Lakeville South for an SSC match on Thursday, then travels across the Minnesota River to play Chaska on Friday.
