Drug store sponsors teen essay contest: Announcement of a national “Teen Forum” open to local teenagers has been made by Jack Andrews of Andrews Rexall Drug. Andrews said he believes the nation’s druggists are responsible, civic-minded individuals, who share a national concern for the growing incidence of juvenile crime. Teenagers will be encouraged to submit their essays under the theme of “My Responsibility to America.” Participation is open to all teenagers who have not finished high school.
Clean-up Week May 19-25: Mayor Melvin Borchardt announced that May 19-25 has been designated as “Clean Up Week in Prior.” All property owners and residents in the Village are encouraged to take a good look at their property and see where they might improve it from an aesthetic point of view. He added that a little cleanup, paint up or fixup can be done for improvement and would make the community more attractive to an out-of-towner or visitor.

School program schedule stays the same: Unlike many school districts in Minnesota, the Prior Lake School District did not have to cut any programs or staff to balance the preliminary budget for the 1985-86 school year that was approved by the board. The budget contained four new positions, but numerous other requests for additional staffing were turned down because of unknown factors that could greatly impact the proposed $6.7 million budget.
Dog dilemmas: Dogs on the loose were a big topic of discussion at the Prior Lake City Council meeting. The council was told about people often being pestered by dogs running loose, along with damage to personal property, particularly in the area of Maple Trail. Local dog catcher Bob McAllister said he was aware of only one dog bite within the city, but the dog had been tied up on the owner’s property. Another dog was shot after chasing some chickens.
Parking plan for lakeside restaurant discussed: The Prior Lake City Council requested more changes to the parking plan proposed by Fred Schweich for Freddie’s on the Lake, a bar/restaurant on the lake, which would eliminate an upper parking lot and restrict all parking to the lower level.

Plans approved for new city hall, police station: The Prior Lake City Council approved design plans and a $13.25 million budget for a new city hall and police station. Estimated completion date for the new buildings to be located along Dakota Street, close to the exiting city hall, was October 2006.
PLHS students, teacher study in Mexico: Seven students and Spanish teacher Sally Davis embarked on a trip to Mexico to experience a slice of what was studied in class at Prior Lake High School. The group spent three days in Mexico City, two in Taxoc and the final three in Acapulco. Students included: Kim Lannon, Danielle Maxfield, Laura Hailstone, Alex Neville, Jenny Swenson, Beth Sames and Lauren Preuss.
Boys’ golf team leads conference: The Lakers’ boys golf team remained at the top of the Missota Conference prior to hosting its championship event on May 23 at Stonebrooke. Top performers for the year were Ryan Beuc, Alex Schumacher, Ryan Borman, Randy Beuc, Bill Chopp and Ryan Petermeier.
