Comcast has officially applied to become another cable and broadband service provider in Prior Lake.
The company, also known as Xfinity, filed an initial application requesting that they be considered for a franchise license to operate within the city. Comcast met the required qualifications, according to City Manager Jason Wedel, and the council, during its regular meeting on July 22, gave authorization for staff to work out details pertaining to a franchise agreement to be considered for approval at a later date.
Meghan Shea, Director of Government Affairs for Comcast, appeared at the council meeting and provided background information on the company. Comcast has numerous technical hubs throughout the Twin Cities area, she said, and operates among the largest fiber networks in the U.S. Services offered to clients would include broadband, mobile, cable television and security options.
Councilmember Zach Braid said he has received requests from local residents for the city to consider more cable and internet provider options, which would create more competition and choices for service.
