Golf cart operators in Prior Lake must be licensed drivers following a decision made by the Prior Lake City Council to amend its ordinance.
Council members voted without opposition at the Nov. 12 meeting to change the ordinance to mirror requirements for driving a car. All golf cart operators must be a licensed driver who is at least 16 years of age, or be 15 years old with a learner’s permit and accompanied by a parent or guardian when driving on local streets.
City Manager Jason Wedel told council members the previous ordinance allowed golf carts to be driven on city streets without driver age restrictions. The issue was first discussed in August during a meeting with Police Chief Liam Duggan that focused on the increasing use of electric vehicles such as E-bikes, scooters, dirt bikes and golf carts being driven on city streets.
