The Prior Lake City Council approved Comcast as another cable television and internet provider at its April 14 meeting.
Comcast, also known as Xfinity, originally applied for a franchise with the city in July of 2025. The company has committed to constructing a fiber network to serve all residential and commercial customers within Prior Lake within the next two years.
The contract calls for a 5% franchise fee to be paid quarterly to the city from the company’s gross revenues. The agreement is consistent with the service contracts it holds with Mediacom and Nuvera, other providers now servicing the city.
Information provided to council members indicated the city staff received ongoing feedback from residents and businesses seeking additional options for cable and internet services. The need became particularly evident in 2020 when increased remote work and distance learning resulting from Covid-19 precautions placed greater demands on broadband access. A staff memo provided to the council concluded “Comcast’s proposed investment represents a meaningful step toward increasing competition and service availability in Prior Lake.”
The proposed schedule calls for system’s installation to take place in 2026 during the regular construction season and into early 2027. Franchise fee payments made to the city are expected to start next year. The franchise agreement will cover a 10-year period.
