Measles outbreak reported: Dr. Olaf Lukk, health officer for Prior Lake Schools, stated that due to the current outbreak of measles in the area, parents were cautioned about the serious complications that could result from the disease. Elementary School Principal Paul Baarsom reported that for a two-week period student absences averaged 60 per day, with measles being the predominant cause. Lukk added that there have also been confirmed cases of mumps and German measles, with one youngster hospitalized with meningitis brought on as a complication from mumps.
“Our Town” on stage: An excellent performance by Prior Lake High School students on stage for “Our Town” was reported in this edition of the Prior Lake American. The play was sponsored by the junior class and directed by Fred Schultz.

Senior Citizen Social Club: On Friday, March 25, the Prior Lake Senior Citizens met with friends from the Valley View Nursing Home in Jordan. On Monday, March 28, at 3 p.m., a catered chow mein dinner will be served to paid-up members. One year starts with April so plan to attend and pay your dues. Dr. John Schousboe, arthritis specialist, will speak and show slide shows on March 30 at 2:30 p.m. Happy Birthday to Dorothy Amundson, Thor Andersen, Ella Cowhey, Marie Kruse, Bernice Laabs, Elsie Lange, Alma McDonald, Helen Mueller, Maude Munter, Louise Pudie and Ann Sayre. – Signed by Clarissa Norton, Reporter
Auxiliary leader at national conference: Minnesota VFW Auxiliary President Lorraine Borka, Prior Lake, attended the 1988 mid-year National Auxiliary Conference held in Charleston, South Carolina.
Athletes of the Week named: Carrie Miller and Tracey Hansen were named the “Female Athletes of the Week,” while Steve Haglund was named “Male Athlete of the Week.” Miller, a senior at Prior Lake High School, is co-captain of the golf team with Hansen. Haglund was named captain of the spring baseball team.

Tops in mathematics: Seven Prior Lake High School math whizzes scored in the top five percent of the American Mathematics Competition. Students earning that honor included: Patrick Snouffer, Eric Pegors, Natasha Smith, Jacob Johnston, James Wagner, Andrew Liffrig and Kobina Taylor.
New developments proposed: Two development proposals on opposite ends of the city would create 180 new single family homes, all priced at $400,000 and up. Pike Lake Ponds was proposed property located near County Road 42 and Pike Lake Trail. Northwood Meadows would include 136 homes on the west side of Northwood Road, just east of Spring Lake Regional Park. Area residents expressed concerns about increased traffic and water issues.
Laker hockey players honored: Earning spots on the All-Missota Conference hockey team were Laker senior Shane O’Keefe and junior Matt Byrnes. Receiving all-conference honorable mention were junior Blake Johnson and sophomore Garret Jacobson. Byrnes was also chosen as the team’s most valuable player, and was to serve as team captain the following year with Anthony White.
