The McKenna Crossing senior housing campus will be expanded in the near future to include a new independent living facility with 72 apartments, following approval received by the Prior Lake City Council on June 9.
Presbyterian Home Services, in partnership with Senior Housing Partners, requested an amendment to the original planned unit development project. The property is located north of County Road 42, at the southwest corner of Shepherd’s Path and North Berens Road.
The original phase of McKenna Crossing was completed in 2007 and has 85 independent living units, 51 assisted living apartments and 18 memory care units. When the campus was proposed, phase 2 was originally intended to be constructed as a skilled nursing facility. The proposal brought before the council indicated demand and market conditions have changed in recent years, and there is now a greater demand for independent living options.
Anticipated parking needs for residents and visitors were outlined by Casey McCabe, Community Development Director, prior to the council vote. While 1.5 spaces per dwelling unit is required, a reduced ratio of 1.2 was deemed to be sufficient to meet resident, staff and visitor needs. A shared parking agreement also exists with Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, which adjoins the McKenna Crossing facility.
The requested amendment received unanimous approval by the council as well as the Prior Lake Planning Commission during its May 18 meeting.
