The United States Tennis Association announced Monday, May 5, that the governing body and its affiliates have awarded Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools a grant of nearly $50,000.
The funds, totaling $48,075, will be used to resurface the eight tennis courts at Prior Lake High School in Savage. In addition to use by the Laker varsity boys and girls tennis teams and physical education classes, the courts will be available for use by Prior Lake Athletics for Youth and the community at large.
“The Prior Lake High School Activities Department, as well as the PLAY program, are very excited and appreciative for this generous grant coming from the USTA,” activities director Jeff Marshall said. “We are excited to have this opportunity to help all of our programs grow.”
In addition to the grant, the USTA provides project management assistance to ensure grant-funded renovations can deliver tennis at a high level, according to a USTA press release.
The resurfacing will be conducted this summer.
Boys team earns conference wins
A pair of conference wins in the last week sandwiched a nonconference loss for the Prior Lake boys tennis team.
The Lakers put a strong performance together against Lakeville South on May Day, earning a 6-1 home win. Jack Williams, Sam Williams, Reid Breimhorst and Adam Greengrass swept the singles play, while the teams of Dallas Handevidt/Tarun Gopi and August Adams/Andy Klema won in the top doubles matchups.
A trip to Lakeville North on May 6 was a tighter matchup, but Prior Lake prevailed, 4-3. Handevidt and Sam Williams won as singles, while the Adams/Klema duo won in No. 1 doubles and Breimhorst/Matt Shplisher won at No. 3 doubles.
The team dropped its May 2 battle with Chaska, 6-1. Lucas Aidas/Handevidt notched the sole win for PL at No. 2 doubles.
