The Lakers had a busy and productive start to the 2026 season, finishing the opening stretch with a 3-1 record. After a dominant conference opener, the team showed immense grit by bouncing back from a tough loss against a No. 2 ranked Edina to secure a thrilling win in their home opener.
On April 7, the Lakers opened their South Suburban Conference schedule with a statement 7-0 sweep of Lakeville South. The team was firing on all cylinders, winning every match in straight sets.
In singles play, Prior Lake’s top four players, Jack Williams, Andy Klema, Sam Williams and Jack Evanson dropped only nine games combined across all four matches.
The doubles team of Matt Shplisher and Reid Breimhorst delivered a particularly dominant 6-0, 6-3 performance.
The Lakers traveled to take on the No. 2 ranked Edina Hornets, falling 0-7. While the final score looked lopsided, the match featured the most resilient performance of the week at No. 3 singles. Dallas Handevidt battled through a marathon match, taking the second set 7-5 before narrowly falling 7-10 in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Returning home to face Lakeville North, the Lakers secured a hard-fought 6-1 victory during the home opener. This match was much closer than the final score suggests, with three different matches going to a third-set tiebreaker — and the Lakers winning all of them.
At No. 1 singles, Jack Williams showed incredible mental toughness, coming back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-3, 10-8. Andy Klema and Dallas Handevidt also secured straight-set wins.
The Lakers swept the doubles points. The No. 3 team of Evanson and Henry Dettman pulled off a dramatic comeback, winning their tiebreaker 10-8 to seal the sweep. The No. 1 team of Tarun Gopi and August Adams also showed resolve, winning a three-set battle 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The Lakers kept their conference momentum rolling on April 14, with another clinical performance.
Prior Lake continued its South Suburban dominance with a comprehensive 7-0 victory over Burnsville. The singles lineup was nearly untouchable, recording three “shout-out” victories at the top three spots to set the tone for the afternoon.
Williams, Klema and Handevidt all delivered flawless 6-0, 6-0 performances. Williams followed suit at No. 4 singles with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win.
The Lakers’ doubles teams also showcased their consistency and depth. Gopi and Adams controlled the No. 1 spot (6-2, 6-1), while Shplisher and Breimhorst were efficient at No. 1, coming in at 6-1 and 6-0. At No. 3 doubles, Gabe Breimhorst and Morris faced a competitive opening set but locked in to secure a 7-5, 6-1 victory, completing the team sweep.
The conference schedule continues into the weekend traveling to Apple Valley and Eden Prairie on April 16 and 17 before heading to Elk River for a tri-angular match against the always formidable Elk River and for another chance against Lakeville North on Saturday, April 18.
