The Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) has named Obioma Osuji, a student at Prior Lake High School and student representative on the Prior Lake-Savage Area School Board, as one of three recipients of the 2026 Robert E. Meeks Student School Board Member Scholarship.
The award, presented at the PLSAS board meeting held May 4, carries a $3,000 prize to be applied toward post-secondary education. Osuji was selected from nearly 60 applicants across the state.
Established in 2009, the MSBA scholarship recognizes student school board representatives who demonstrate exceptional leadership, academic achievement and commitment to school governance. More than 130 of Minnesota’s 331 public school districts have a student representative at the board table.
“The primary role of school boards is to advocate for student success,” said MSBA Executive Director Kirk Schneidawind. “There is no better way to get input as a board member than getting it directly from a student representative.”
A selection committee of five MSBA Board Directors recognized Osuji for his outstanding academic record, extensive leadership in student government, dedicated community service and participation in multiple varsity sports. He has earned a 3.878 grade point average while concurrently pursuing college coursework through the PSEO program at Normandale Community College, where he earned Dean’s List honors and membership in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Osuji has served as student council president, student council treasurer and National Honor Society chair. A two-sport varsity letterman in football and volleyball, he also co-founded Prior Lake High School’s Pickleball Club, growing its membership from 15 to 175 students.
Among the qualities that distinguished Osuji’s application was his initiative in creating student-led surveys to bring data-driven insights to the school board. In his scholarship essay, Osuji expressed his goal for the board to make decisions “with the students, rather than simply for them.”
“Obioma does not simply report events; he synthesizes student voice and connects it to district-level priorities,” said PLSAS
Superintendent Michael J. Thomas. “His presence strengthens our board’s ability to remain student-centered in its conversations.”
“Obioma’s leadership is rooted in service and character,” said PLSAS Board Chair Amy Bullyan. “He brings credibility, empathy and purpose to every role he undertakes. His ability to listen carefully, synthesize diverse perspectives and communicate effectively in a governance setting distinguishes him well beyond his years.”
MSBA President and Shakopee School Board Member Kristi Peterson presented the award alongside Schneidawind at the school board meeting, highlighting the scholarship committee’s unanimous enthusiasm for Osuji’s application. MSBA is a nonprofit organization that serves Minnesota’s public school boards by providing training, legal services, policy guidance and advocacy. The Robert E. Meeks Student School Board Member Scholarship, established in 2009, is awarded annually to up to three student representatives who demonstrate outstanding leadership and commitment to school governance.
